Diablo 5 targets fall 2029 release alongside Switch 2 port

Blizzard unveiled Diablo 5 on September 12, 2026, during BlizzCon, targeting an official release window in fall 2029. The action role-playing game advances the dark fantasy storyline by one century past the events of the previous entry.

Senior director Joe Shelly outlined how Sanctuary now endures a brutal reality dominated directly by Diablo. The demonic lord crushed human civilization and forced all remaining survivors into perpetual flight. Players must navigate desolate territories while avoiding hostile pursuers across the fractured world.

Sanctuary falls under direct rule of Diablo in darker storyline

The narrative jumps one hundred years ahead to portray a setting where Diablo sits unchallenged upon the throne. Narrative director Jennifer Helper explained that the development team designed an oppressive environment where displaced survivors must scratch for every inch of territory after Diablo claimed the central throne and shattered human civilization across the entire continent. This creative direction steers the franchise into its bleakest tone to date. Displaced clans must wage desperate skirmishes simply to secure basic survival resources.

The development studio also assigned the alternative title Diablo V to the project. Blizzard reiterated that the upcoming campaign will give combatants an urgent, tangible purpose as they resist overwhelming demonic control.

Blizzard confirmed the project at BlizzCon.

Blizzard outlines expansion plans and console rollout for Diablo 4

While Diablo 5 remains in active production, Diablo 4 continues to receive scheduled support from Blizzard. The 2023 action RPG received the Lord of Hatred expansion in April. Blizzard scheduled the introduction of the playable Amazon class for the first half of 2027.

Nintendo Switch 2 owners will receive Diablo 4 on September 15, 2026. This platform debut expands audience access to Sanctuary well before the arrival of the upcoming character class.
