A police response to a routine call in Santa Monica escalated into a fatal shooting when an officer discharged his firearm, striking a man who advanced towards him with a large knife in a busy seaside park. The incident, captured on bodycam video, occurred amidst a crowd of pedestrians and visitors, highlighting the rapid escalation of dangerous encounters faced by law enforcement.

The confrontation unfolded on August 22 as Santa Monica Police Department officers investigated an unrelated disturbance near the Broadway stairs. The man killed was identified as Michael Rodriguez, 44, by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. Authorities released critical incident briefing materials, including bodycam footage, to enhance transparency regarding the deadly event.

Deadly confrontation unfolds

Uniformed officers were dispatched to Broadway and Ocean Avenue around 12:30 p.m. They engaged with witnesses in the 1400 block of Palisades Park. This popular oceanfront location was bustling with people enjoying the Saturday afternoon when officers observed Rodriguez, who was not connected to their initial call. He held a substantial knife raised above his head, moving directly towards an officer and several bystanders, creating an immediate and grave threat.

The newly released bodycam footage from one of the responding officers vividly illustrates the tense moments before the shooting. An officer can be heard repeatedly issuing urgent commands for Rodriguez to drop the weapon. Simultaneously, the officer drew his service weapon and began retreating, attempting to create distance and de-escalate the volatile situation while warning the man.

Ignoring warnings and advancing

Despite the officer’s clear and repeated shouts to “Put that down,” Rodriguez disregarded these warnings. He continued his advance with the large knife held high. He steadily closed the gap with the retreating officer. Police accounts indicate Rodriguez then quickened his pace, intensifying the perceived threat to the officer and nearby individuals.

As the distance rapidly diminished and Rodriguez persisted in his aggressive posture, the officer fired a single shot from his department-issued firearm. The round struck Rodriguez in the chest, causing him to fall to the ground. Video from a second officer’s bodycam shows the knife dropping from Rodriguez’s hand as he collapsed.

Immediate aftermath and multiple weapons

Following the shot, officers promptly called for immediate backup and requested emergency medical personnel to the scene. One officer’s voice can be heard requesting assistance, stating, “Officer needs help,” before instructing witnesses to remain at the location. The officers then approached Rodriguez to secure the scene and check for additional threats.

During this assessment, officers made a concerning discovery: a second knife was found in Rodriguez’s right pants pocket. Further inspection revealed the handle of a third knife protruding from his backpack. Investigators later detailed the primary weapon used in the confrontation as:

  • A large, fixed-blade “fighting and utility style” weapon.
  • Featuring a clip-point blade.
  • Equipped with a protective hand guard.
  • Possessing a metal grip.
  • With serrations along part of its spine.

Officers immediately initiated first aid, applying gauze and a chest seal to Rodriguez’s wound and performing chest compressions. An officer was heard pleading, “Come on, you need to breathe,” as they continued their life-saving efforts. Santa Monica Fire Department personnel subsequently took over medical care and transported Rodriguez to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room at approximately 1:49 p.m.

Official response and ongoing investigations

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner determined Rodriguez died from a gunshot wound to the chest, ruling his death a homicide. The case remains open, according to official records. No officers, bystanders, or other members of the public sustained injuries during the incident.

Santa Monica Police Chief Darrick Jacob addressed the incident, acknowledging the profound impact of such events. “Any loss of life is tragic, and we recognize the impact on the family, our officers, and our community,” Chief Jacob stated. He emphasized the daily challenges faced by law enforcement, adding, “When a life is lost during a police encounter, our responsibility to provide a clear and open account is especially important. Releasing this video is an important step in providing that account to our community.”

The incident has triggered multiple layers of investigation. Santa Monica Police Department detectives are conducting a criminal inquiry into the shooting. Concurrently, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will independently review the officer’s use of deadly force, while the police department initiates an internal administrative investigation. Authorities have cautioned that the released bodycam video and accompanying briefing represent preliminary evidence and do not constitute final findings or conclusions.
