Public school student from Mirassol tops USP law admissions via Provão Paulista, showcasing academic excellence
Kalel Rodrigues de Souza, an 18-year-old student from a public school in Mirassol, a city in São Paulo’s interior, has achieved a remarkable feat by securing the first position in the highly competitive law program at the University of São Paulo (USP). His achievement came through the Provão Paulista Seriado, an assessment system that announced its approved candidates this past Monday.

This significant accomplishment underscores the potential of public education and its role in fostering top-tier talent across the state. Kalel’s success not only places him at the pinnacle of one of Brazil’s most prestigious law faculties but also highlights a journey of academic dedication and strategic engagement.
The results, made public as students prepare for enrollment deadlines this week, have drawn attention to the efficacy of the serially administered exam in identifying and rewarding consistent academic performance throughout high school.
Beyond law: a track record of top academic placements
Kalel’s academic prowess extends far beyond his admission to USP’s Faculty of Law, known affectionately as “Sanfran.” His cumulative scores in the Provão Paulista Seriado would have also positioned him prominently in other highly sought-after university courses.
Remarkably, these same scores would have qualified him for the second position in medicine at USP, one of the country’s most competitive medical programs. Furthermore, he was eligible for third place in medicine at Unicamp (University of Campinas) and the second spot in law at Unesp (São Paulo State University), demonstrating a broad and exceptional academic range.
His ability to excel across multiple, distinct fields like law and medicine, which typically demand varied skill sets, speaks volumes about his versatile intellectual capabilities. This multi-faceted success makes his story particularly compelling within the national educational landscape.
Public schooling and olympiad success
The student’s success story is deeply rooted in his experience within the public education system, where he has studied since the first year of elementary school. For Kalel, the public school environment provided crucial elements for his development, including a sense of community and the freedom to build his foundational knowledge.
Describing himself as a “child of the olympiad,” Kalel strategically leveraged knowledge competitions as stepping stones in his academic career. He has amassed more than ten medals in various prestigious tournaments, including the Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad (Obmep), the National Science Olympiad (ONC), and the Geography Olympiad.
At Escola Estadual Genaro Domarco, his high school, Kalel took initiative by founding a youth study club. This club aimed to prepare fellow students for academic challenges, an endeavor that earned him an invitation to Bangkok, Thailand, in 2024. There, he competed in the International Mathematics Without Borders Olympiad, bringing home a silver medal alongside nine of his schoolmates. This international recognition further cemented his reputation as a formidable scholar and a leader.
The choice for justice and intellectual growth
Despite his strong aptitude for exact sciences and a potential career in medicine, Kalel’s ultimate decision to pursue law was driven by a profound affinity for reading and writing. This passion aligns with the demanding verbal and analytical skills required for legal studies.
He achieved an impressive score of 960 on the essay portion of the ENEM (National High School Exam), showcasing his exceptional command of language and argumentation. Kalel sees the logical reasoning honed through mathematics as a vital support for legal rhetoric, emphasizing the interdisciplinary nature of his intellectual approach.
Before committing to USP, he also gained admission to the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV) and Unesp, where he again secured second place for law. His journey exemplifies the power of education as a transformative force, enabling individuals to access opportunities that once appeared out of reach.
Facing new challenges in the capital
With his enrollment now confirmed, Kalel’s immediate focus shifts to the practicalities of living and studying in São Paulo. As a newcomer to the bustling metropolis without prior acquaintances, the aspiring “Sanfran” law student plans to seek student permanence aid and university housing.
These support systems are crucial for him to manage the logistics and financial aspects of his higher education, with classes scheduled to commence in February. His determination to navigate these challenges reflects the resilience often cultivated in students who overcome significant obstacles to pursue their academic dreams.
Kalel’s path was consistently supported by dedicated teachers from the state school system, who guided him through various selection processes starting from elementary school. He even declined scholarship offers from private schools during his second year of high school, choosing to complete his education in Mirassol due to the strong bonds formed within his community. His commitment to public education is unwavering, as he firmly states that “public school, if nurtured with care and love, can indeed yield good fruits. It transforms lives.”
His journey, culminating in a prestigious admission on the eve of International Education Day, celebrated every February 24 by the UN, stands as a powerful testament to education as a primary driver for societal advancement and for subverting traditional statistics.
