Sam Kerr opened the scoring with a header in the 13th minute at King Power Stadium and became the highest scorer in Chelsea’s WSL history, scoring her 64th goal in the top division. The 3-1 victory over Leicester guaranteed Blues participation in Campeões Feminina’s Liga next season. Kerr will leave the club this summer to join NWSL newcomer Denver Summit.

The Australian celebrated the historic feat in a modest way. “It’s a big achievement for me, I’ll probably only realize it in 10 years, when I’m retired!”, he told BBC Sport. “Every goal is very important to me, and scoring a goal for a big club like Chelsea is really special.”

Lauren James dominates the first half with two precision goals

Lauren James was the star of the first half, scoring Chelsea’s second and third goals before the break. The English winger demonstrated superior technical quality by controlling the ball 20 meters from the goal. Seu’s first goal came from a spectacular shot that left no chances for Katie Keane. Seis minutes later, she took an unstoppable free kick from inside the box, with the ball hitting the underside of the crossbar before going into the corner.

“Two steps, not bad, right?” joked James in an interview with BBC Sport about his run for the shot. Ela revealed that he observed the goalkeeper’s position at the time of the execution. “I was looking at where the goalkeeper was, it was pretty close, to be honest. Algumas people thought I wasn’t going to shoot over the top, but the goalkeeper gave me space to the other side and the ball went straight into the corner.”

James’s performance was so impressive that coach Sonia Bompastor decided to spare her during the break, preparing the team for the next competitions. The midfielder and Erin Cuthbert were replaced before the second half, signaling a planned tactical rotation.

Leicester scores on defensive error

Leicester managed to reduce the score in the first stage through Shannon O’Brien. The player took advantage of a blind retreat from Lucy Bronze that was intercepted and executed a precise shot that beat Livia Peng, who was out of position. The goal maintained some hope for the hosts, who were facing a difficult situation in terms of confidence.

Após the break, Leicester returned with greater commitment, but was unable to create dangerous situations. The visitors controlled the game with ease, consolidating the victory and sealing their participation in the Liga of the Campeões. Chelsea’s defense remained secure throughout the second half, preventing Foxes, bottom of the table, from creating a real danger to Peng’s goal.

Bompastor highlights the quality of the cast in an atmosphere of trust

Chelsea’s coach praised the team’s overall performance after the match. “Everyone knows the quality that Lauren has. Ninguém needs to teach her how to have quality. It’s great to see players like that, it’s a joy to have them on the team, and that also pleases the fans,” he said. Ela explained James’s replacement as part of a larger rotation plan targeting Copa’s Inglaterra semifinal.

“It was part of the plan to take her off the field. But it’s good when you take players off the field and they want to continue playing. Visávamos rotate the team a little today, with players more rested for future commitments”, added Bompastor. Ela highlighted that Chelsea is going through a moment of high confidence, with intense training during the week and consistent performance in games.
