GitHub mocks Sony and promises to send repositories on CD
Several companies have been using Sony’s recent decision to end sales of PlayStation games on physical media as a marketing tactic. In fact, indirectly, Microsoft, through its subsidiary GitHub, announced the offer of CD-ROM copies of code repositories that are stored on the platform, in a clear provocation to the Japanese giant.
It is important to remember that GitHub has been part of the Microsoft group since 2018. The promise to make physical copies of the codes available was announced through the official GitHub account on the X social network, with the following translated message:
“We heard you. And we agree. In light of recent decisions about physical media, GitHub is proud to announce that you can now get your public repository on CD-ROM. Keep it. Lend it to friends. Pass it on to your kids. Your code is physically yours, forever. Until you lose it, let’s be real.”

The initiative generated a series of diverse responses, some of them with a tone as ironic as the proposal itself. Among the comments, observations such as the difficulty of finding a CD-ROM reader nowadays, and playful requests for copies to be sent on floppy disks stood out.
GitHub Actions Are Strategic Marketing, Not April Fools’ Joke
At first, the statement could be mistaken for an April Fools joke. However, GitHub’s proposal is, in fact, genuine. The company seeks to capitalize on the controversy generated by Sony’s measure to boost a marketing campaign.
The nature of the campaign becomes evident when analyzing the page linked to the statement. In it, interested parties must fill out a form requesting information such as full name, email address, location and the desired repository.

GitHub details, in the description, that the deadline for filling out the form is July 6, 2026. Furthermore, CDs will only be shipped to the first thousand registrants who meet the eligibility criteria, and media delivery may take several weeks to complete.
Understand the controversy generated by Sony’s decision on physical media

Sony started the month of July with the announcement that, from January 2028, it will no longer sell new PlayStation games in physical format. This news generated a wave of discontent and protests by players on social media, who expressed great dissatisfaction with the change. The decision reflects a broader trend in the gaming market towards exclusively digital distribution, raising discussions about the future of game preservation and ownership of acquired content.
To further worsen the situation, shortly after the main announcement, Sony confirmed that it will also discontinue PlayStation Store operations for the PS3 and PS Vita consoles.
