Atlético de Madrid has reevaluated its hiring plans and is close to giving up negotiations with midfielder João Gomes. The Spanish club is now looking for a new name to strengthen its midfield, indicating a significant change in its market strategy.

Previously, a proposal of 40 million euros, which is equivalent to around 265 million reais in the current conversion, had been formalized to Wolverhampton by the Brazilian player. However, conversations have slowed down considerably in recent days, mainly due to internal disagreements with representatives linked to the transfer.

Another decisive factor in the change of plans was the progress in negotiations to sign Danish Morten Hjulmand, Sporting’s midfielder. Progress with Hjulmand, who plays in the same position as João Gomes, caused interest in the former Flamengo player to diminish.

Hjulmand, seen as one of Sporting’s main athletes, is on track to be acquired by Atlético de Madrid for a total sum of 45 million euros. Of this amount, approximately 265 million reais, 5 million euros are conditioned on the player’s achievement of performance goals.

At 25 years old, João Gomes has already played four seasons in English football, standing out in the most recent with 36 games as a starter in 41 appearances. Although his individual performance is notable, Wolverhampton’s relegation from the Premier League could affect the value of his transfer, making the club more likely to negotiate for him, as relegation often pressures teams to reduce wages and reevaluate their squads, even with his contract extended until June 2030.

In the Wolverhampton squad, there is also another Brazilian midfielder, André, who previously played for Fluminense. He has a contractual relationship until the same period as João Gomes and remains in the club’s plans for the 2026/27 season.
