A new and strong earthquake hit Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, on July 28, 2026, at around 4:27 pm. The event, which reached a maximum seismic intensity of 7, received an official designation from the Japan Meteorological Agency. The agency is also investigating a possible link to the large tremors that occurred in the same region in 2016, which generated great destruction.

Japanese agency officially names new earthquake

The Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed that the quake was named “Magnitude 8 Kumamoto Earthquake.” This is the first time that an earthquake has received an official name since the “Noto Peninsula Earthquake”, recorded on January 1, 2024. The official name contributes to the cataloging and study of the country’s geological events, helping to understand their recurrence and impact.

History of large tremors in Kumamoto Prefecture

Kumamoto Prefecture has a history of strong seismic activity, making it an area of constant concern in Japan. In 2016, the region was the scene of the “Kumamoto Earthquake”, which also reached a maximum seismic intensity of 7 on two separate occasions, causing extensive damage. The epicenter of the most recent tremor, on July 28, 2026, is located about 20 kilometers southwest of the central area of the 2016 tremors, indicating a geographic proximity that raises questions.

The uncertain relationship with the seismic events of 2016

The Japan Meteorological Agency has stated that it is “still unclear” whether the current earthquakes have any direct connection to the 2016 Kumamoto tremors. The uncertainty surrounding this relationship raises important questions about the region’s geological dynamics. However, the agency recalled a pattern observed at the time that serves as a warning and reinforces the need for caution.

  • April 14: A first shock of magnitude 6.5, which reached seismic intensity 7.
  • April 16: Two days later, a more powerful tremor, of magnitude 7.3, which also reached seismic intensity 7.

This chronology demonstrates the possibility of subsequent events and the importance of continued vigilance for area residents. The agency monitors activity to identify possible aftershocks or new, larger events.

Double alert: new tremors and heat wave worry residents

In view of the seismic instability, the agency issued an alert for Kumamoto residents to maintain maximum vigilance in the coming days. The population must be prepared for the possibility of future earthquakes, following safety protocols.

In addition to concerns about earthquakes, the province faces a forecast of intensely hot days, with temperatures that could exceed 35 degrees Celsius. Nights are also considered “tropical”, with minimums that do not fall below 25 degrees Celsius. The Japan Meteorological Agency recommends precautions against heatstroke, especially for those in evacuation centers where conditions can be more challenging. The combination of geological instability and extreme weather conditions requires increased attention from authorities and the population.
