7.7 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia leaves dead and triggers tsunami warning
A significant earthquake of magnitude 7.7 shook the coastal region of Indonesia in the early hours of August 15, 2026, local time, while in Brazil it was the evening of August 14, 2026. The effects of the tremor included material damage and the loss of at least 47 lives, according to reports from official sources.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) detailed that the seismic event occurred at around 5:58 am Indonesian time, with its epicenter at a depth of 10 kilometers. Subsequently, at least three aftershocks were recorded, one of them reaching a magnitude of 6.1.

Images captured the moment a section of a port terminal collapsed in the city of Maumere, located on Flores Island. In these scenes, it is possible to observe inhabitants rushing around the city’s streets.

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency promptly issued a tsunami warning, advising people to move away from coastal regions and riverbeds. Residents of impacted coastal areas were advised to seek higher ground.

According to information from the agency, the epicenter of the tremor was located at sea, in a shallow area near Flores Island. Local authorities have also begun rigorous monitoring of sea level indicators, with the aim of detecting any changes.
In a subsequent development, authorities in the region confirmed that the phenomenon only generated small waves, with a maximum height of 1 meter. As a result, the tsunami warning was revoked shortly afterwards.
Local press reports indicated that several homes, hotels and some buildings in a location close to the epicenter suffered damage.
