A tragic accident interrupted the vacation of a European family visiting one of Brazil’s main postcards on July 29, 2026. Dutch tourist Mark Lensink, aged 26, lost his life after the boat he was on sank in the turbulent waters of the Iguaçu National Park, located in the city of Foz do Iguaçu, in western Paraná. The young man was participating in a private tour run by the company Macuco Safari, a traditional attraction that takes visitors into close contact with the waterfalls.

The border region attracts thousands of foreigners annually due to the magnitude of its natural beauty, with boat trips through the rapids being one of the most popular activities. The incident generated an immediate mobilization of several security and rescue forces operating within the environmental reserve, highlighting the complexity of operating in an area characterized by strong currents and rugged geography.

Local and federal authorities have already begun legal procedures to understand what caused the boat to capsize in a stretch of the river that, historically, has strict navigation protocols. The fatality raises questions about the current hydrological conditions and the safety challenges in adventure ecotourism activities, even when operated by experienced concessionaires and certified by the competent bodies.

Dynamics of the shipwreck in the waters of the Iguaçu River

The itinerary chosen by the family consisted of exclusive navigation, a modality in which the boat is reserved only for a closed group. A total of eight people were on board the Macuco Safari dealership’s water equipment: Mark, five of his family members, as well as the pilot and co-pilot responsible for driving the vessel. The route requires great technical skill from the crew to overcome the waves formed by the volume of water falling from the falls.

According to preliminary data released by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), the federal agency that manages the park, the boat tipped over around noon. The exact location of the accident is within environmental protection limits, in a sector where the strength of the current is usually intense. With the sudden overturn of the structure, all eight occupants were thrown into the riverbed.

The company’s own monitoring teams acted quickly to remove passengers from the water. Survival in incidents of this type crucially depends on the first minutes of reaction, considering the risk of thermal shock, disorientation and the continuous force of the water flow that pushes any obstacle downstream.

Medical efforts and the health status of survivors

The complexity of the rescue required a joint operation that involved the concessionaire’s employees, the Paraná Military Fire Department, the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu), the Brazilian Navy and ICMBio inspectors. According to reports from rescue teams, Mark Lensink suffered a severe drowning that quickly progressed to cardiorespiratory arrest shortly after being removed from the water.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers began inside the national park. Due to the difficulty of land access to the canyon, the victim had to be transported by river to Port Kattamaram, a structured support point for boarding and disembarking. From there, an advanced support ambulance took the final route to the Padre Germano Lauck Municipal Hospital. Despite the insistence of medical teams throughout the journey and in the emergency room, the young man’s death was officially declared at the health unit.

The impact of the wreck also left physical marks on the other members of the family group, who required immediate hospital attention. The medical report revealed the following among the young man’s relatives:

  • A 49-year-old man required hospitalization and remained under clinical observation, with a health condition considered stable.
  • A 48-year-old woman suffered a fractured foot as a result of the impact during a fall into the water.
  • A third family member underwent a battery of detailed examinations in the emergency room and was discharged shortly afterwards.

Trajectory of the young Dutchman and the family business

Mark Lensink lived in the city of Rijssen, a municipality located in the province of Overijssel, in the eastern region of the Netherlands. The trip to Brazil represented a moment of leisure and family togetherness, exploring South American destinations very far from their European routine. In his professional networks, the boy demonstrated a strong connection with local entrepreneurship in his hometown.

He worked directly in the construction sector, being a fundamental part of the team at Lensink Bouwservice, an established family company in his region. His dedication to business was complemented by his academic training, having completed higher education at Saxion Hogeschool, a prestigious institution of applied sciences also located in the Netherlands. The news of his untimely death caused deep commotion among friends and business partners on the European continent.

Open investigations and preventive suspension of tours

To elucidate the exact causes of the collapse, the Paraná Civil Police launched an immediate investigation. Investigators are focused on collecting statements from surviving relatives, who are still dealing with the trauma, in addition to listening to company employees and witnesses who witnessed the movement on the river. Expert reports prepared by the Scientific Police will be attached to the process to determine whether there was a mechanical failure, human error or a fatality caused by unpredictable natural conditions.

In parallel to the criminal investigation, the Brazilian Navy opened an Administrative Inquiry into Navigation Accidents and Facts (IAFN). This procedure is standard in water events and has the technical objective of evaluating the condition of the vessel, the validity of the crew’s licenses and identifying possible responsibilities in the context of river safety.

As an immediate administrative response, ICMBio ordered the total stoppage of Macuco Safari’s operations for a period of three days, starting on July 30, 2026. The federal authority highlighted that the concessionaire operated regularly, having all the permits and certifications required by law to explore tourism in the area. The temporary pause was established exclusively to guarantee perimeter security and allow experts to work without interference in collecting evidence about the tragic episode.
