McLaren announced on September 1, 2026 that it will introduce a rotating rear wing on its vehicles, starting with the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix. This new device, called “H-Wing”, is similar to models already used by Ferrari and Red Bull Racing since the beginning of the season. The Monza stage represents the 13th race on the F1 calendar in 2026.
What is the team’s new rear wing
The component was named “H-Wing” by the team, which refers to one of its sponsors. Initially, the English team planned to test the equipment in Austria, but the idea was abandoned.
The device carried out its first tests on the track during training for the Hungarian Grand Prix, in July 2026, but had not yet been used in official competitions.
McLaren technical director talks about the search for competitiveness
As explained by Neil Houldey, McLaren’s technical director, the implementation of this new feature is an important step towards improving the team’s competitiveness. In addition to the rear wing, the current constructors’ champion will evaluate other aerodynamic elements specific to the Monza circuit. This race track is recognized for its long straights and strong braking points, which justifies the search for low-drag components like the H-Wing to maximize speed.
Houldey said: “We’ve brought what we believe we need to be competitive, including a new low-drag rear wing specification – with the first use of our H-Wing – as well as some small aerodynamic and low-drag options that we will evaluate before deciding on the final specification for qualifying. Overall, we know there is still more performance to be explored in the MCL40, both by maximizing the package we already have and through new upgrades planned for upcoming races.”
Car design changes and recent performance
The British team will also present small changes to the car’s design at Monza, highlighting a new paint job on the rear wing.
Recently, McLaren achieved victories in the last two Formula 1 Grands Prix, in Hungary and the Netherlands. Currently, the team occupies third place in the constructors’ championship, accumulating 263 points.
