Alexander Zverev surpasses Flavio Cobolli and goes ahead at Madrid Masters

Alexander Zverev defeated Flavio Cobolli in Madri’s Aberto quarterfinals. The German number three in the world won 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 on the main court of the Spanish tournament. The match lasted just over an hour and a half this Wednesday.

The German set the pace from the start. Ele broke the Italian’s serve in the first games and gave him no chance to react. Cobolli, number 10 in the rankings, tried to vary the game, but found few openings against his opponent’s aggressive forehand.

Zverev controls the first set with ease

The German quickly took a 3-0 lead in the first set. Ele took advantage of the good percentage of first serves and put pressure on Cobolli’s backhand. The Italian made unforced errors at key moments and lost the set 6-1. Zverev won 82% of the points with the first serve in this period.

The third set followed the same pattern. Zverev broke at the beginning and managed the advantage until the end. The 6-2 victory ended the match without any major scares. Cobolli showed determination, but was unable to maintain his level against the German’s solid game.

Zverev finished with 67 points gained against 47 for the Italian. Ele won nine service games out of ten played. Cobolli had just 49% success on his first serve and converted none of the two break points he had.

The German advanced to the semifinals of the Masters 1000. Ele is looking for his third Madri title in his career. Zverev already lifted the trophy in 2018 and 2021 on clay in the Spanish capital.

Cobolli leaves Madri with a good campaign

The Italian reached the quarter-finals for the first time in an Masters 1000 this season. Ele had eliminated Daniil Medvedev in the round of 16. The defeat to Zverev interrupted the positive sequence, but confirmed the 24-year-old tennis player’s good moment on the circuit.

Zverev now awaits the winner of the other quarterfinal duel. The German demonstrated that he is physically recovered after longer previous games in the tournament.
