Spaniard loses leg in shark attack in Maldives and jokes: we started well

Borja Garcia Sousa, 31, lost a leg after being attacked by a shark while bathing with his wife Ana Solsona on an excursion to Kooddoo’s island, in Maldivas, on April 11. The Spaniard was bitten during his honeymoon and had all the flesh on his leg ripped from the knee down. Passadas weeks after the incident, Borja reacted to the tragic episode with humor by posting on social media.

The post on Instagram brought the phrase that quickly circulated among friends and family: “What can I say… we’re off to a great start, aren’t we?”

The attack occurred in front of his wife

The couple was in a tour group taking a tour of Kooddoo’s island when Borja went into the water. A relative who traveled to support him told “Daily Mail” the brutal details of what happened. Segundo local reports, the animal responsible was identified as a tiger shark, although the region is known for the presence of spinner sharks.

“With one bite, the shark ripped off all the flesh on the leg, from the knee down,” described the family member. The attack took place in front of Ana, leaving both of them in shock. Borja was immediately removed from the water and received emergency medical attention.

Borja was hospitalized in the intensive care unit of a local hospital for several days following the incident. During this period, Durante received visits from family members who came to Maldivas to support him. The Spaniard publicly thanked everyone who helped him during his recovery in the ICU.

“All the helping hands, all the messages and all the prayers said for me, I’m sure they reached heaven in an instant and, somehow, brought me back,” he wrote on his social networks. Faith and emotional support marked her recovery journey in the first days after the traumatic episode.

Reflexão on the fragility of life

The Spaniard highlighted, however, his conviction that what happened would just be an obstacle on the way. “Not for a moment did we stop believing that it would just be an obstacle on the way. The companions highlighted the rarity and brutality of the event that occurred precisely during a honeymoon, a period that should have been one of the happiest in the couple’s lives. “For something like this to happen on your honeymoon, when you should be enjoying the happiest moments of your life, is terrible and unusual,” commented another colleague. Futuro and return to Espanha

Borja is waiting for medical clearance to travel back to Espanha with his wife Ana. Ambos remain in Maldivas during the recovery process and release of local health professionals. The couple remains in close contact with family members at Espanha who are monitoring their situation.

In the final message published, Borja made clear his desire to return to family life. “I can’t wait to return to Espanha, laugh until it hurts, cry with emotion, hug and kiss our loved ones tightly as if time had stopped”, concluded the Spaniard in a hopeful tone despite the adversities.
