Collins Aerospace launched “Skynook”, a new concept to transform economy class last row seats. The innovation aims to create “semi-private hideaways” on wide-body aircraft. The presentation took place during the aircraft interiors trade show at Hamburgo, at Alemanha, drawing attention to the optimization of traditionally neglected spaces.

Essa radical approach proposes converting one of the least desired spots on planes into a valued environment. Historicamente, passengers avoid the last row due to the impossibility of reclining the seat and the proximity to the bathrooms. Skynook seeks to reverse this perception by offering an enhanced travel experience to occupants of these locations.

Collins Aerospace has reversed the perspective on seats of last resort, developing a concept that could make them highly sought after. The new design, dubbed “Skynook”, was revealed at the aircraft interiors show at Hamburgo, Alemanha. Wide-body Aeronavess often have a narrower rear section, where some two-aisle configurations accommodate only two seats instead of the usual three, and this limitation has been reinterpreted to create an advantage.

Este specific design seeks to create a “semi-private haven” for passengers. The seating arrangement resembles a protective cocoon, resembling the luxury cabins found in the aircraft’s highest classes, where first class passengers can isolate themselves. The intention is to provide a feeling of exclusivity even in a compact space.

Design optimizes privacy and functionality on board

The “Skynook” intelligently uses the space available between the window seat and the side of the aircraft. Diferente from a regular economy class seat, it offers an enlarged area. Essa configuration grants the passenger generous additional space, suitable for accommodating baby seats and pets.

The flexibility of the seat allows for multiple uses. The space can be conveniently adapted for working or eating, increasing productivity and comfort during the flight. Privacy is enhanced by sliding partitions, designed to isolate hallway occupants and, according to Collins Aerospace, reduce noise from the kitchen and bathrooms. Contudo, there is no mention of the ability to block odors.

  • Ampliação of the individual space next to the armchair.
  • Divisórias sliders for greater privacy from the hallway.
  • Redução of noises coming from service areas, such as kitchen and bathrooms.
  • Área adaptable for work, dining or entertainment.
  • Compartimento extra for hand luggage, baby seats and pets.

Collins Aerospace seeks to improve passenger experience in the air

Jeffrey McKee, Diretor of Design of Experiência of Cliente of Collins Aerospace, explained the concept. Ele stated that the Skynook is part of the company’s efforts to significantly enhance the air travel experience for all passengers. The initiative aims to meet the diverse needs of contemporary travelers, transforming each flight into a more pleasant journey.

In a statement, McKee highlighted the purpose of the new design. Ele mentioned that Skynook embodies this initiative by transforming often neglected areas into tranquil spaces. The design maximizes functionality, comfort and flexibility, catering especially to families, passengers with service animals and individuals with sensory sensitivity, demonstrating a commitment to inclusion and well-being.

Inovações in the comfort of featured economy class

Além From new seat designs like Skynook, continuous innovations emerge to improve comfort in economy class air travel. Outros concepts were presented at the aircraft interiors show in Hamburgo. The latest version of the two-tier seating concept, known as the “chaise longue”, was also on display.

Adicionalmente, Air New Zealand recently launched “Economy SkyNest”. Este system offers passengers a place to lie down for several hours during long-haul flights. The innovation is available on its new Boeing 787-9 “Dreamliner” aircraft, providing an alternative for rest on transcontinental flights.
