Healthy Bebês who pass neonatal tests are suffering brain bleeds and death after parents reject the vitamin K injection given at birth. The procedure, recommended more than 60 years ago by Academia Americana of Pediatria, is being refused by an increasing number of families, influenced by false information spread on social networks. Dados published in December shows that more than 5% of newborns in the US will not have received the shot in 2024, a 77% increase from 2017.

Deficiency of this essential vitamin causes a rare but potentially fatal condition that pathologists have identified in autopsies as the cause of death in multiple cases over the past few years. Centenas of children die annually from spontaneous cerebral hemorrhages associated with a lack of vitamin K. Segundo or Centro of Controle and Prevenção of Doenças American, 1 in 5 babies with hemorrhage due to vitamin K deficiency dies.

Histórico Success and Risk Resurgence

Nobel of Fisiologia was awarded in 1943 for advances in understanding vitamin K and its ability to form blood clots in newborns. Desde 1961, the injection became so successful that it virtually eliminated vitamin deficiency bleeding. Pediatras stopped investing in educational efforts on the topic because the condition had become rare, a victory that, paradoxically, created fertile ground for oblivion.

“We are victims of our own success,” explains Dr. Ivan Hand, director of neonatology at Kings County Hospital Center at Nova York. “Since we started treating babies with vitamin K, we haven’t seen many cases, so people think it doesn’t exist.”

Essa false sense of security coincided with the spread of misinformation on digital platforms. No Facebook, comments from parents describe the shot as a “big lie”, “scare tactic” and “pharmaceutical industry poison”. A 2023 podcast episode by conservative host Candace Owens alleged that Big Pharma was artificially creating the need for vitamin K in newborns.

Aumento documented in hospitals

Hospitais across the country recorded an increase in parental refusals. The Mercy system, which operates maternity wards in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas, delivered 1,552 babies without the shot last year compared to 536 in 2021. No St. Luke’s Health System, Idaho’s largest hospital system, the rate rose from 3.8% in 2020 to 9.8% in 2025. One individual hospital even recorded 20% refusals.

The consequences already appear in hospital records:

  • Convulsões in seven-week-old babies
  • respiratory Parada in newborns
  • Brain Hemorragia in children less than two weeks old
  • Sangramento around the navel
  • Severe Letargia and need for intubation

Risco biological inevitable

Todos newborns are born with a natural deficiency of vitamin K. The placenta does not transfer sufficient amounts during pregnancy, and breast milk contains only small amounts. Bebês who are exclusively breastfed have an even higher risk. Para those who do not receive the preventive injection, the risk of bleeding varies from 1 in 14 thousand to 1 in 25 thousand births. With the injection, this risk drops to less than 1 in 100,000.

Pesquisadores doesn’t fully understand why some uninjected babies remain healthy while others suffer uncontrollable bleeding. What they know for sure is that the injection is effective. Academia Americana of Pediatria updated its policy statement in 2022 to address misconceptions:

  • The injection does not contain mercury
  • Vitamina K does not cause cancer
  • The dose is safe for newborns
  • The injection does not cause leukemia

Desgosto of affected families

ProPublica interviewed five families who lost babies to vitamin K deficiency hemorrhages, but none wanted to be publicly identified. The obituaries and GoFundMe pages reveal restrained despair. One mother wrote: “No one could have prepared us for the pain we faced 6 weeks after the birth of our little miracle. Ela had a spontaneous and unexplained brain hemorrhage that led to brain death.”

Dois of these couples had subsequent children and, when faced with the same decision, chose to administer vitamin K. One father initially expressed outrage at the hospital for not delaying clamping the umbilical cord, believing that doing so would provide the baby with enough vitamin K—a theory popular on social media but disproved by research.

Official monitoring Falta

Nenhuma federal or state agency collects systematic data on vitamin K refusals or subsequent bleeding, preventing accurate quantification of preventable deaths. Até 700 newborns died from spontaneous brain hemorrhages in 2024, according to federal data. Seis Medical experts and a CDC official said a significant portion of these deaths likely resulted from vitamin K deficiency.

The Dr. Robert Sidonio Jr., pediatric hematologist oncologist at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, identified the first outbreak of deficiency bleeding cases in 2013, when four babies in Nashville arrived at the hospital simultaneously. Ele warned, with evident frustration, that without a mandatory reporting system, nothing will change: “If you don’t monitor it, you don’t document it. Eles need to make this a reportable health condition, just like a new case of measles.”

The Dra. Kristan Scott, author of the national study on the increase in refusals, came to the same conclusion. Individual Hospitaiss have begun collecting data, but efforts remain scattered and often kept in-house, preventing broader visibility into the issue.

Desafio educational in a context of distrust

Pediatras face mounting obstacles in recommending the three standard interventions for newborns: vitamin K injection, antibiotic ophthalmic ointment, and hepatitis B vaccine. The last factor — a post-pandemic wave of distrust in public health — has created a hostile environment for simple preventive medicine.

Alguns Doctors, when newborns with hemorrhage arrive at the emergency room, do not recognize the role of vitamin K. Muitos only encountered the condition in college textbooks. The Dra. Anna Morad, pediatrician at Hospital Infantil at Universidade Vanderbilt at Nashville, has witnessed a resurgence of cases after a period of quiescence. Ela and colleagues visited birth centers to educate families. Seu effort worked temporarily.

“Naively, I thought we had turned the corner,” said Morad, who now oversees Vanderbilt Health’s maternity ward.
