Denuvo forces online authentication every 14 days after new bypass method
Anti-piracy system Denuvo and 2K Games have implemented mandatory online verification every two weeks for protected titles. The measure responds directly to the hypervisor bypass published by the MKDev group Collective and the user DenuvOwO, who managed to bypass protection in single-player games without completely removing the security system. The new mechanism forces an authentication call to the Denuvo servers every 14 days, making replication through the hypervisor-based bypass method impossible.
Como the bypass worked before the change
The method called hypervisor-based bypass (HVB) does not completely remove Denuvo from the game’s executable. Ele simulates a virtualized environment that tricks the protection system, allowing execution without legitimate validation. Apesar is technically not a traditional crack, the practical result is functional: anyone can play a protected title without paying for it. The approach differs from conventional cracks that extract and modify the protection code.

2K Games and Denuvo reportedly retaliate with mandatory 14-day online checks.

HVB maintains a point of contact with Denuvo — verification with servers — precisely because it does not change the main executable. Essa feature was the loophole that allowed the method to work, but now it becomes its weak point with the new requirement for periodic authentication. Segundo analysis of Tom’s Hardware portal, mandatory verification is impossible to emulate via hypervisor-based bypass as it requires a direct request and response from the servers.
Consequências for legit players
Denuvo’s solution generates significant consequences for consumers who paid for the games. Jogadores with an unstable connection or using portable devices like the Steam Deck may be unable to play titles they have purchased if they are unable to connect to the servers within the two-week window. The concern also extends to long-term digital preservation.
Quando Denuvo servers are discontinued in the future, titles with mandatory verification may become permanently unplayable, even for legal owners. Essa issue has been affecting game preservation communities for years. The first 2K Games titles with the new mandatory verification are:
- NBA 2K25
- NBA 2K26
- Marvel’s Midnight Suns
The continuous cycle of protection and contouring
The situation reveals a structural impasse in the games sector. Denuvo reacts with increasingly restrictive measures against pirates, while crackers continue to find new workarounds. Essa escalation mainly harms players who buy originals. An interesting side effect appeared on the market: developers began to announce the absence of Denuvo as a positive selling point, recognizing that the protection alienates legitimate consumers.

Quando publishers add system close to launch, face significant community backlash. Essa backlash demonstrates the tension between the need to protect intellectual property and the legitimate user experience. Especialistas point out that the two-week verification represents Denuvo’s most direct reaction against a bypass that achieved its main objective: giving access to protected games without payment.
Perspectivas Future Conflict
Porém, experts point out that this solution is temporary. Conforme security researchers study the new check, possible workarounds may emerge. The true resolution of this conflict involves deeper changes in the industry — or in the way games are distributed and protected. For now, the conflict between protection, piracy and legitimate user experience remains without a structural solution, with Denuvo continually testing new approaches.
