The Ipswich Town team, which recently secured its place in the coveted Premier League, finds itself unexpectedly without a manager. Professional Kieran McKenna officially announced this Wednesday (10) the end of his relationship with the British institution, ending a winning cycle that lasted five consecutive seasons.

At 40 years old, the tactician born in Northern Ireland chose to take a break from his career in professional sport to prioritize spending time with his family. This surprising resolution was announced just a few days after the professional led the traditional squad back to the top shelf of the English sporting scene, a feat widely celebrated by local fans.

The coach’s work began in December 2021, a period in which the club was facing serious difficulties in League One, a competition equivalent to the national third division. In a short space of time, the commander managed to revolutionize the squad’s tactical stance, implementing an attack-oriented mentality that quickly translated into solid performance within the four lines.

During his tenure on the pitch, the team celebrated three division promotions over the course of four championships. The culmination of this project occurred at the end of the 2025/26 calendar, when the group secured second place in the Championship, ensuring an instant return to the Premier League immediately after having spent a year competing in the second tier.

Throughout his remarkable time at the Portman Road stadium, the professional built a true dynasty recognized by individual awards, such as the trophy for best coach in the EFL. The retrospective of his 222 matches as head of the coaching staff presents the following numbers:

  • 105 triumphs achieved throughout the championships;
  • 64 clashes ended in equality on the scoreboard;
  • 53 setbacks suffered during the entire period of work.

In a formal statement addressed to the fans, the professional expressed enormous satisfaction with everything that had been built in recent years. He was keen to emphasize that “it was a privilege to manage this historic club”, adding that “now is the right time for a break and to be closer to family”, thus ending his cycle in an amicable way.

The board of the British association publicly regretted the decision, although it made clear its absolute respect for the professional’s intimate choice. Before making his departure official, the coach had already firmly dismissed recent rumors that pointed to him as a target for other organizations in the English elite, including inquiries coming from Fulham.

Ipswich Town’s top management has already started moving behind the scenes to map the market and define who will take over the drawing board left behind by the former commander. As commitments for the new edition of the Premier League begin in mid-August, the management understands that it is essential to find a replacement quickly to guarantee the necessary stability in the fight to remain in the main division.
