Series ‘The Boroughs’ is canceled by Netflix after topping Nielsen’s streaming rankings
The cancellation of original productions is a constant feature of Netflix, frequently generating discussions about quality and audience criteria. However, the recent case of “The Boroughs” presents a peculiar scenario, where the series had both attributes. The streaming platform’s decision generated surprise in the market and among the public.
“The Boroughs”, a production by the Duffer brothers, responsible for “Stranger Things”, had its discontinuation announced weeks after its release. The series achieved a 96% approval rating from specialized critics on Rotten Tomatoes, one of the platform’s highest ratings in 2026. In addition to appearing at the top of Netflix’s internal ranking of the ten most watched productions, recently released indicators point to an even higher performance.
Recent data from Nielsen reveals the performance of “The Boroughs” in streaming. After debuting in second place overall among all services, the production quickly reached the top in the following week, surpassing titles such as “Spider-Noir”, from Amazon, and “Euphoria”, from HBO Max. In contrast, “The Four Seasons”, another Netflix series, which accumulated 782 million minutes watched – a volume significantly lower than the 1.74 billion of “The Boroughs” –, received confirmation of a third season, generating questions about the renewal criteria.
The narrative of “The Boroughs” followed a group of retirees, played by an experienced cast that included names like Alfred Molina, Geena Davis and Alfre Woodard, committed to unraveling a macabre mystery in their neighborhood. Originally planned for three seasons, production was abruptly discontinued, even with a first season ending that left a lasting cliffhanger for the next batch of episodes. The decision caused surprise, including among the actors themselves.
Actress Geena Davis, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, expressed her disappointment. She reported that the series’ creators informed the cast before the official announcement. “Honestly, I don’t know what happened. It’s unusual for a series to be canceled while it’s still in the top ten most-watched rankings. We didn’t expect that,” said Davis, underlining the team’s perplexity with the platform’s decision.
