The long-awaited release of “Enola Holmes 3” reignites debates about the continuity of the popular franchise on Netflix, even before the public has finished watching the new adventure. The issue of producing a fourth film is already on the agenda, generating speculation about the future of the series starring Millie Bobby Brown.

The streaming platform has not yet made official the production of “Enola Holmes 4”. This stance is standard in the company’s renewal strategy, which awaits the consolidation of audience and consumption data for the new season, a process that generally takes at least a week after the global premiere.

The series’ consolidated performance in streaming

Despite the lack of confirmation, the franchise’s audience history indicates considerable potential for continuity. The first film, released amid the pandemic, recorded an impressive 1.165 billion minutes watched in its first week alone, reaching second place in Nielsen’s streaming rankings. The sequence surpassed this milestone, accumulating 64 million hours watched in the first three days, which took it to the top of Netflix’s global weekly rankings. Furthermore, specialized critics evaluate the franchise positively, with 91% and 93% approval on Rotten Tomatoes for the first two features, respectively. These robust numbers are a favorable indication for renewal.

The innovations that distinguish Enola Holmes 3 from the previous films

“Enola Holmes 3” marks a significant change in direction, now under the direction of Philip Barantini, known for the success of the crime drama “Adolescence”. This is the first time the series has not been directed by Harry Bradbeer. Barantini’s proposal for the third film adopted a notably darker tone, intending to do “for the franchise what Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban did for the Harry Potter series”. This change in narrative style may indicate new plot possibilities, exploring more complex and mature facets of the story.

The new film’s cast includes the addition of Himesh Patel as Dr. John Watson, alongside the returns of Millie Bobby Brown as Enola, Henry Cavill as Sherlock, Louis Partridge as Lord Tewkesbury and Helena Bonham Carter in the role of Eudoria Holmes. Bringing these talents together would be essential for any continuation of the saga.

The vast literary material that feeds the original saga

The “Enola Holmes” films are inspired by Nancy Springer’s ten-book mystery series, which began publication in 2006. The first feature film adapted “The Case of the Missing Marquis”, while the second incorporated elements from the second and third volumes. With a wealth of books not yet explored, a fourth film would have considerable material available for development, allowing Netflix to expand the narrative, should it choose to proceed with production.

The outcome of Enola Holmes 3 and the question of a possible post-credits scene

The third film does not feature a post-credits scene. The outcome shows Enola and Earnest, the former Lord Tewkesbury, making their union official in a relaxed moment by the sea. The camera then reveals a submerged ship called “Adeline’s Wrath”, and the screen fades to black without leaving any loose ends or indications of an immediate sequence. Unlike the previous films, this ending offers fewer hooks for an obvious sequel, leading to speculation.

Enola’s phrase, “every good story ends with a wedding”, also contributes to the ambiguity, and can refer both to the specific outcome of the film and to the conclusion of the character’s own journey. Considering the protagonist’s feminist inclinations, it is expected that the first interpretation is the correct one, leaving room for future developments.

The deadline for announcing a decision on continuation

Netflix’s standard for renewal decisions for major productions tends to vary between four and eight weeks after release. If “Enola Holmes 3” maintains the performance of its predecessors, an announcement about “Enola Holmes 4” could occur as early as August 2026.

Millie Bobby Brown, who in addition to starring as the film’s executive producer alongside her husband, Jake Bongiovi, has considerable influence over the development of the franchise. The perception that the series is of great importance to her increases the chances of a possible sequel, but the final decision will depend on data analysis by the platform.
