Spanish athlete Jéssica Bouzas Maneiro was formally warned by referees during the prestigious Wimbledon Tournament, after failing to comply with the competition’s strict dress code, in her match against Ukrainian tennis player Dayana Yastremska.

The official reprimand was communicated to Maneiro by a judge shortly after her consistent victory over Potapova, with scores of 6/2 and 6/3, in a match played on Court 17 of the British tennis event.

The notification received by Bouzas was motivated by the use of a black t-shirt underneath the traditional white uniform. This item of clothing became noticeable on the athlete’s lower back near the end of the game. As reported by the Daily Star, the referee warned the tennis player and requested that such an occurrence not happen again.

Bouzas, currently 52nd in the women’s world rankings, detailed the incident in an interview with the Movistar Plus Deportes television channel. She stated that “the main issue is their extreme rigidity with several aspects. I believe that a small portion of black was visible, and this is not tolerated, so I need to provide a solution. In fact, the organization is quite inflexible with these details, and now I will find out how I can adapt.”

Wimbledon, historically recognized for its adherence to centuries-old traditions, remains world-renowned for its inflexibility regarding athletes’ clothing. The championship regulations explicitly determine that “participants must wear clothing suitable for tennis, which is almost completely white, and this requirement will be in effect from the moment the tennis player enters the court area. The color white does not include shades such as ice white or cream.” This rigidity reflects the tournament’s long history of preserving a classic aesthetic code, differentiating it from other competitions.

The regulatory document adds further, establishing that “extensive areas or bands of solid colors are not permitted. Only a discreet colored detail is tolerated on the collar and sleeve cuffs, as long as their width does not exceed one centimeter (10 mm).”

Additionally, the clothing manual specifies: “any colors incorporated into prints will be considered as constituting a continuous area and, likewise, must adhere to the maximum limit of one centimeter (10 mm). Logos that use different fabric textures or that are printed are also not authorized.”

Bouzas Maneiro’s next challenge at the Wimbledon tournament is scheduled against Turkish athlete Zeynep Sönmez.
