As the Argentina team advances to the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) became the target of a complex investigation, which began to take shape in 2025.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and federal prosecutors in the United States are investigating AFA’s financial operations, with the aim of clarifying transactions that exceed US$300 million (approximately R$1.55 billion) within the American banking system. The participation of US authorities is due to jurisdiction over financial crimes that use its banking system.

Understand the reasons behind the investigation into the Argentine federation

FBI agents and members of the United States Department of Justice have already collected statements related to AFA’s financial operations on American soil. The focus is to determine whether part of these transactions may constitute crimes under the country’s legislation, including money laundering or bank fraud, ensuring the integrity of the financial system.

The investigations focus on the actions of the AFA, currently chaired by Claudio Tapia, and its connection with the company TourProdEnter LLC. This company worked as a collection agent for the federation’s international contracts, involving sponsors and commercial partners.

Details on the progress of the investigation into the case

FBI agents also heard from businessman Guilherme Tofoni in a video conference meeting. Investigators seek to identify whether certain operations linked to the AFA can be classified as crimes, such as money laundering or fraud in the United States banking system.

The investigations, which intensified in 2025, are led by Attorneys General Patrick Gushue and Christopher Ting, who work in Washington. Michael Berger, who is part of the Southern District of Florida, is also part of the team responsible for this case.

Gushue is a member of the Department of Justice’s Banking Integrity Unit, a division specializing in financial crimes. On the other hand, Berger was involved in the conviction of the former controller general of Ecuador, Carlos Ramón Polit Faggioni, for money laundering in Miami.

Understand the role of TourProdEnter LLC in the payment flow

The company TourProdEnter LLC came under investigation after assuming responsibility as a collection agent for AFA’s international contracts. The suspicion is that the company would have directed hundreds of millions of dollars originating from agreements with multinationals.

Among the agreements under scrutiny are a US$60 million (equivalent to approximately R$310.34 million) contract with Adidas and another US$40 million (approximately R$206.9 million) with Warner. To date, the AFA has not issued any public statement regarding the investigation.
