New leaks indicate that Apple is preparing a significant battery upgrade for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, which could result in the largest capacity ever seen on a branded smartphone. However, this improvement may come at a cost: the device may be a little thicker and heavier than its predecessor.
For many years, Apple has prioritized a balance between performance, industrial design and battery life, rather than focusing solely on capacity. The most recent rumors suggest a change in this strategy, driven by the growing energy demands of artificial intelligence resources that run directly on the device.
Larger battery can offer almost 10% more autonomy
Previous reports indicated that the iPhone 18 Pro Max would only bring minor improvements in battery life compared to the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
However, more recent leaks paint a different picture, suggesting that the new model could deliver almost 10% longer battery life.
Well-known leaker Ice Universe now claims that the iPhone 18 Pro Max will be equipped with a 5,500mAh battery.
If confirmed, this capacity would represent a substantial increase over the 5,088mAh battery widely speculated for the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
An addition of more than 400mAh could significantly improve performance in real-world use, especially in demanding activities such as high-resolution video recording, gaming, photo editing and prolonged use of Apple Intelligence features.
This battery would become the largest ever installed in an iPhone, reflecting Apple’s growing emphasis on durability as the demands of smartphones become increasingly energy-intensive.

Possible thicker and heavier design on the device
Ice Universe also reported that the iPhone 18 Pro Max could weigh around 240 grams, compared to the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s estimated 233 grams.
Although the difference is only 7 grams, some users may feel the additional weight during prolonged use of the device.
The thickness of the phone is also expected to increase from approximately 8.75mm to around 9mm.
While the 0.25mm increase may seem small, it suggests that Apple may be willing to compromise a little on its ultra-thin design philosophy to accommodate a larger capacity battery.
This isn’t the first report to indicate that the iPhone 18 Pro Max could get thicker.

Another well-known source, Fixed Focus Digital, had previously claimed that the iPhone 18 Pro Max would also grow in size, but offered a different explanation.
According to this report, the increase would mainly result from a larger rear camera module, not battery capacity.
The account even suggested that the camera bump could be made approximately 2mm thicker, although it is not yet clear whether this number refers only to the camera casing or the overall thickness of the device.

Consequently, the two sets of leaks are not entirely consistent and will require additional confirmation closer to the device’s official launch.
Battery life should remain Apple’s focus
Industry observers also note that neither Ice Universe nor Fixed Focus Digital have an impeccable track record when it comes to Apple products.
While Ice Universe has accurately predicted several Android smartphones, the source’s track record with iPhone leaks has been more inconsistent. Fixed Focus Digital also produced reports with varying levels of accuracy.
For now, all information about the dimensions, weight and battery capacity of the iPhone 18 Pro Max remains speculative.
Apple is expected to reveal the final specifications only when the device is officially introduced.
Even if the iPhone 18 Pro Max becomes thicker and heavier, Apple is unlikely to highlight these physical changes during the product presentation.
Instead, the company has traditionally emphasized battery life in practice, such as additional hours of video playback, streaming or listening to audio, rather than touting battery capacity in milliampere-hours.
