The England team, after a victorious journey in the quarter-finals where they eliminated Norway, faced Argentina in an intense semi-final on Wednesday and ended up being defeated. The result marked the end of England’s participation in the tournament.
British royals express sadness and pride after intense game
The clash in Atlanta was marked by moments of great tension, with the match heading into extra time before Argentina secured a 2-1 victory. After the final whistle, several members of the British royal family took to social media to express their feelings of sadness and pride at the team’s performance.
King Charles, 77, and Queen Camilla, 78, shared a touching post on Instagram. The message read: “My condolences to Harry and the team. Although you ‘Three Lions’ may be licking your wounds today, you are still the pride of an entire nation – and you will rise again.”
Prince William regrets defeat and gives up on going to the final
Prince William, 44, also expressed his deep disappointment. He described himself as “heartbroken” by the result of the game.
In his Instagram post, the prince wrote: “Devastated. England, you gave your all and we are all so proud of you.” He continued, thanking: “Thank you everyone, on and off the field, for an incredible tournament. The fighting spirit and belief you showed inspired us all. The most complete England team in a tournament. Keep your heads up. W.”
William, who had already announced that he would travel to the United States to watch the final if England got there, had his plans canceled with the team’s elimination. His absence from the stadium for the semi-final was notable.
Recently, the prince was seen effusively celebrating the victory of his favorite team, Aston Villa, in the Europa League, highlighting his engagement with football on other occasions.
However, the reason behind his absence from previous World Cup games appears to be linked to issues that transcend sport. Royal family expert Richard Fitzwilliams offered perspective on the matter in an interview with Celebrity Intelligence.
Fitzwilliams suggested the absence may be related to diplomacy with the United States. “The moment William lands in America, the White House finds out,” the expert explained. He added that, “if Prince William had come to the US, it would almost certainly have included a meeting with President Trump.” Diplomatic complexity, therefore, could have influenced the decision not to travel.
Prince William’s decision could break with long-standing royal tradition
Regarding the administration of royal appointments, Fitzwilliams highlighted the importance of them being used sparingly, as it is good management that gives them prestige. This consideration, which may have led to William’s decision, could be seen as a departure from a more than 200-year tradition of royal engagement in high-profile events without direct political interventions.
David Beckham joins the lamentations over elimination
David Beckham, 51, also used his social media to lament England’s defeat in the semi-final.
In his post, Beckham expressed: “A painful loss for us all, but memories that inspire and last forever… Thank you to our team, our fans and our country for everything they gave us at this World Cup.”
Beckham and his family followed the team closely in the United States. The former player was photographed with his sons Romeo, 23, and Cruz, 21, during an English team training session days before the decisive match.
