The Brazilian women’s volleyball team will have a busy schedule on Wednesday, July 22, with clashes on two continents and in different tournaments. This duplicity of commitments reflects not only the density of the international calendar, but also a strategy by the technical committee to promote the renewal of the national squad.
The challenges for Brazil will take place in Macau, China, the stage for the decisive stages of the League of Nations (VNL), and in Lima, Peru, host of the Copa Sudamericana. In the VNL, the objective is to win a title that the team does not yet have. In the continental tournament, the dispute aims for a place in the South American Championship, scheduled for September at Maracanãzinho, which in turn qualifies for the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028. All matches will be broadcast on sportv2.
Brazil seeks unprecedented title against Japan in China
The first clash will be at 8:30 am (local time), in China, with the team under the direction of José Roberto Guimarães. Players like Júlia Bergmann and Ana Cristina are highlights of the team that will face Japan in the quarterfinals of the VNL, a championship in which Brazil, since its creation in 2018, has never reached the top of the podium.
This duel marks a reunion between the Brazilian and Japanese teams. The two teams had already faced each other in the third week of the qualifying phase, when the yellow-green team won by 3 sets to 1 away from home.
Second team from Brazil competes in Peru
Later, at 3:15 pm (local time), the Brazilian team B will face Bolivia. The team will be led by Wagão, who is Zé Roberto’s assistant on the main team. In this initial stage of the competition, Brazil will also have duels against Peru and Chile, and the top two in each group will advance to the semifinals.
The continental tournament will guarantee four places for the pre-Olympics that will take place in September. Brazil, like Argentina, already has its participation assured, making this competition an excellent opportunity to evaluate new athletes and teams.
Technical committee renewal strategy
The focus on the rotation of athletes and the development of new talents was a point highlighted by Zé Roberto even before the announcement of the call-ups for this season’s challenges.
“We will operate with two groups: team A and team B. Team B offers a significant chance for those players who are very close to the main group to participate in training and games, or not. The same goes for squad A. We will need to put in a lot of effort to preserve the standard of Brazilian volleyball at its current level”, declared Zé Roberto during the women’s Superliga final.
