Helldivers 2 director attacks Ubisoft and Embracer executives for mass layoffs

The climate behind the scenes of the global video game market has reached a critical level of tension, culminating in public outbursts from veterans in the field. Dave Gallacher, current head of quality control at Arrowhead Game Studios — a developer that surprised the world with the absolute success of Helldivers 2 in 2024 — used his professional networks to expose a deep dissatisfaction with the corporate scenario. Carrying more than a decade of experience at DICE before moving to his current studio, the expert did not mince words when analyzing the severe unemployment crisis that haunts producers, pointing the finger directly at the top echelon of digital entertainment giants.

Publication on LinkedIn exposes outrage and calls for severe punishments for executives

Through a scathing text published on LinkedIn, the quality director painted a bleak picture about the forces that currently drive the sector. In the professional’s view, the structural basis of the electronic games industry has been completely hijacked by purely financial interests, being guided by individuals who he classifies as greedy and responsible for disastrous choices over the last decade. The central point of their demonstration revolves around the absolute impunity enjoyed by presidents and directors, whose flawed business strategies rarely result in personal, financial or legal consequences for the decision-makers themselves.

The main target of this indignation fell on two of the biggest powers in the European market: the French publisher Ubisoft and the Swedish holding company Embracer Group. Gallacher expressed real perplexity at the fact that the leaders of these organizations do not face criminal investigations or arrest warrants for the administrative maneuvers they have recently implemented. From a developer’s perspective, these companies’ business practices border on unethical, leaving thousands of talented creators destitute and struggling to pay their mortgages. The manager noted with irony that these same laid-off professionals now find themselves forced to perform financial miracles to build independent studios from scratch, while the real culprits for the collapse remain comfortable in their seats of power.

End of pandemic boom accelerates restructuring and drastic cuts in the sector

The recent explosion of sincerity works as an echo of warnings that the expert himself had been issuing for a long time. In a previous protest, which coincided with Microsoft’s aggressive announcement about the elimination of 3,200 jobs in the Xbox division — a historic cut for the North American brand after billion-dollar acquisitions — he already demonstrated exhaustion with the endless cycle of bad news. The industry veteran revealed that, during the last three years, he adopted the term “bloodbath” to describe his annual predictions for the games market, deeply regretting that reality has managed to overcome his pessimism and has become even more cruel with each new fiscal calendar.

To understand the seriousness of the accusations, it is essential to observe the economic backdrop that swallowed these corporations. During the height of the global health crisis, gaming consumption soared, leading companies like Embracer Group to embark on a billion-dollar acquisition spree, buying dozens of studios under the promise of endless expansion. With the normalization of consumption and the rise in global interest rates, the bubble burst violently. The Swedish holding company saw around US$2 billion in market value evaporate, forcing the abrupt closure of traditional developers and the cancellation of long-awaited works. At the same time, Ubisoft began to face its own internal restructuring, accumulating a frightening volume of layoffs since 2022 in an attempt to balance its finances after launches that did not reach expected commercial goals.

  • Microsoft promoted the biggest staff reduction in its history in the gaming division, impacting 3,200 families shortly after consolidating the purchase of Activision Blizzard.
  • Ubisoft is heading towards the milestone of 4,000 employees laid off in just two years, drastically shrinking its global operation.
  • Conglomerate Embracer Group destroyed billions of dollars in market value, shuttering entire studios and shelving valuable intellectual property.
  • Epic Games eliminated more than 1,000 jobs citing a drop in engagement, even though it owns an ecosystem that has already generated an impressive US$26 billion in revenue.

Record profits contrast with layoffs and investments in artificial intelligence

The Arrowhead employee’s revolt takes on even denser contours when placed side by side with the commercial results of specific products. He recalled his time working at Electronic Arts to illustrate the total disconnect between sales success and job stability. The team responsible for creating Battlefield 2042 (referred to internally as the sixth major title in the franchise) suffered significant casualties shortly after the game registered an impressive 20 million units sold, consolidating itself as the most profitable launch in the entire history of the shooting series. According to sector critics, this model that precisely punishes the creators of financial success highlights a systemic flaw in the way large publishers distribute and reinvest their profits.

At the end of his reasoning, Gallacher raises a crucial question about the final destination of all the capital generated by interactive entertainment. He harshly criticizes the stance of executives who live in delusions of grandeur, speaking to shareholders about attracting billions of new players while, in practice, emptying the factory floor. The bitterest point of his statement accuses these leaders of diverting the money saved by laying off human talent to finance what he dubbed the “plagiarism machine”, in a direct reference to the recent and massive investments in generative artificial intelligence tools. For the veteran, the attempt to replace human creative work with algorithms once and for all consolidates the entry of the games market into its darkest and most desolate era.
