Health authorities in São Paulo have officially ruled out methanol poisoning as the cause of death for a 15-year-old Venezuelan girl, Sofia Del Valle Torrealba Ramos, whose passing in early February 2025 prompted a widespread investigation. The announcement, made recently by the State Health Secretariat, alters the focus of the ongoing inquiry into her tragic death. Ramos died after consuming gin with a cousin in a Cidade Tiradentes establishment.

Initial findings from police reports had preliminarily suggested possible methanol intoxication, citing an association with renal dysfunction and metabolic acidosis observed in the teenager. This led to an intensive investigation, considering other similar cases reported across the state. The confirmation from the health department provides a significant update to the complex case that has drawn considerable attention.

Initial suspicion and immediate aftermath

Sofia Del Valle Torrealba Ramos tragically passed away on Monday, February 5, 2025, after an outing with her 13-year-old cousin. The two girls reportedly purchased gin from an adega (wine cellar) located on Rua Alfonso Asturaro, in Cidade Tiradentes, an eastern district of the state capital, São Paulo. They then consumed the alcoholic beverage with other individuals.

The initial suspicion of methanol poisoning arose due to the rapid onset of severe symptoms, which align with the characteristics of such intoxication. The police swiftly launched an investigation, probing the circumstances surrounding the purchase and consumption of the beverage. The adega owner involved in the sale was previously taken into custody as part of the inquiry into the incident.

A timeline of events leading to the tragedy

The sequence of events began in the early hours of January 1, 2025, when Sofia and her cousin left home to attend a party. Upon returning later that morning, Sofia exhibited agitated behavior, raising concerns among family members. The girls reportedly purchased gin from a local adega, later consuming it with other young people.

Following the purchase, the teenagers visited a friend’s house where other adults were present, including a woman known to Sofia. During their time there, an individual reportedly offered the cousin a white container holding an unidentified substance, which she declined to consume. This detail became a crucial point of interest for investigators trying to piece together the events that unfolded before Sofia’s collapse.

Investigation developments and health department findings

On the morning of Friday, February 2, Sofia’s mother found her daughter unconscious. She was immediately taken to an urgent care unit before being transferred to Cidade Tiradentes Hospital, where her death was confirmed. The case remains under active investigation by the 49th Police District in São Mateus.

The São Paulo State Health Secretariat’s definitive exclusion of methanol as the cause marks a significant turning point. This official declaration follows extensive laboratory analysis and forensic examinations, which now direct the investigative efforts toward other potential causes for the young girl’s sudden death.

Broader context of methanol cases in São Paulo

The recent discard of methanol poisoning in Sofia’s case contrasts with other confirmed incidents across São Paulo state. According to recent reports by the State Health Secretariat, the total number of confirmed methanol intoxication cases has reached 51, leading to 11 fatalities. These figures highlight the ongoing public health concern regarding illicit or contaminated alcoholic beverages.

Confirmed fatalities from methanol poisoning in the state include:

* Four men (aged 26, 45, 48, and 54) residing in São Paulo city.
* A 30-year-old woman and a 62-year-old man from São Bernardo do Campo.
* Two men (aged 23 and 25) and a 27-year-old woman from Osasco.
* A 37-year-old man from Jundiaí.
* A 26-year-old man from Sorocaba.

Ongoing investigations into other deaths

The State Health Secretariat also reported that 564 other suspected cases of methanol intoxication have been similarly discarded after thorough investigation. This indicates a high level of vigilance and testing for such incidents across the state’s health system, ensuring precise identification of causes.

Currently, four additional deaths are still under investigation for potential links to methanol poisoning. These cases include a 39-year-old patient from Guariba, a 31-year-old from São José dos Campos, and two individuals aged 29 and 38 from Cajamar. These ongoing inquiries underscore the complexities involved in toxicological analyses and the importance of definitive medical findings in determining causes of death, especially when illicit substances are suspected.
