Joelson Veloso, father of the late influencer Isabel Veloso, shared a deeply moving tribute on social media this Wednesday, May 14, following her passing from cancer on Saturday, May 11. His message honored his 19-year-old daughter, praising her immense courage and unique spirit throughout her arduous health battle. The heartfelt post included a photograph of Isabel and quickly resonated with her followers, highlighting her unwavering resilience.

Veloso began his tribute by stating that Isabel “lived life her way,” emphasizing her strong will and independent spirit. He lovingly referred to her as “my princess, my light,” and underscored the extraordinary challenges she faced with remarkable bravery. Her father detailed how Isabel endured suffering in silence, smiled even through immense pain, and loved profoundly, leaving a significant impact on those around her.

A father’s poignant farewell

The tribute continued with Joelson expressing his immense pride in Isabel’s ability to live authentically, without seeking external validation or applause. He celebrated her life as a powerful example of faith and courage, inspiring many who followed her journey. Her father’s words painted a picture of a young woman who consistently chose to face adversity with dignity and an indomitable spirit.

He acknowledged the painful reality that “the end has arrived,” yet highlighted that Isabel confronted it with the same bravery she displayed throughout her life. Joelson recounted that life was never easy for his daughter, but she never wavered from her truth. She battled against all odds, dreamed big, and maintained her spirit of love and joy despite personal wounds.

Living life “her way”

Joelson Veloso stressed that Isabel never succumbed to her pain, instead leaving an indelible mark wherever she went. His tribute culminated in a touching reference to Frank Sinatra’s iconic song “My Way,” stating that if he could choose a song to define her, it would be that one, because “until the end, with every beat of your heart, you lived… your way.” This powerful metaphor encapsulated her fiercely independent and courageous approach to life.

Concluding his emotional message, Joelson wrote, “My ‘toco’… my princess… I love you to the moon and back.” This personal and tender farewell resonated deeply, echoing the profound bond between a father and his daughter. The tribute served as a testament to Isabel’s enduring legacy and the love she inspired.

Isabel’s challenging health journey

Isabel Veloso’s challenging journey with Hodgkin lymphoma began in October 2021 when she was just 15 years old. Doctors discovered a tumor in her neck and chest, which severely impeded her breathing and put pressure on her heart, marking the beginning of a prolonged and intense battle against the disease. She bravely underwent extensive treatments and procedures, displaying remarkable resilience.

In March 2022, she completed her final session of initial treatment, a moment of hope for her and her family. However, the optimism was short-lived as, just two months later, she received the devastating news that the treatments had not yielded the desired effect. This setback marked a crucial turning point, leading to further complex medical interventions.

She subsequently underwent an autologous bone marrow transplant, a demanding procedure aimed at eradicating the cancer. By January 2023, Isabel joyfully shared with her followers that she had “beaten cancer,” offering a beacon of hope to many. She continued with immunotherapy until September of that year to help restore her health and prevent recurrence.

Despite this period of remission, the cancer aggressively returned. In January 2024, Isabel announced that her tumor had reappeared, and doctors classified her condition as terminal. This news brought a wave of sorrow to her vast online community, who had closely followed her inspiring fight.

The Hodgkin lymphoma battle

Hodgkin lymphoma is a type of cancer that originates in white blood cells called lymphocytes, which are part of the body’s immune system. It typically starts in the lymph nodes and can spread to other organs. The disease is more common in two age groups: young adults (ages 20-40) and older adults (over 55), making Isabel’s early diagnosis particularly impactful.

Treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma often involves chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and in some cases, stem cell transplantation. The prognosis varies widely depending on the stage of cancer at diagnosis and how well it responds to initial therapies. Early detection and aggressive treatment are crucial for improving outcomes.

Patients undergoing these treatments often experience significant side effects, including fatigue, nausea, hair loss, and compromised immune systems. The journey requires immense physical and emotional endurance, a testament to the strength shown by individuals like Isabel Veloso in their fight against the disease.

Recurrence and a terminal diagnosis

In May 2024, Isabel once again announced an emotional remission, leading to plans for a new bone marrow transplant using material from her father, Joelson, who shared a 60% compatibility. The procedure was successfully performed, and she was discharged earlier than expected, sparking renewed hope among her supporters for a lasting recovery.

However, just 17 days after her discharge, Isabel experienced a severe respiratory crisis due to an excess of magnesium in her blood, leading to her urgent re-hospitalization and intubation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This sudden downturn highlighted the delicate and unpredictable nature of her condition. Tragically, Isabel Veloso passed away on May 11, 2024, at the age of 19, concluding her courageous battle.

A life of inspiration cut short

Isabel Veloso’s journey, marked by both profound struggles and unwavering determination, touched countless lives. Her openness about her fight against cancer transformed her into a symbol of resilience and hope for many. Her father’s poignant tribute serves as a powerful reminder of her vibrant spirit and the lasting impact she left on the world, inspiring others to live authentically and face life’s challenges with courage.
