Economic analysts have sharply adjusted their forecast for Brazil’s benchmark Selic interest rate this week. This marks a notable shift from prior expectations, reflecting increased market caution.
For 23 consecutive weeks, the market anticipated a 0.50 percentage point cut. Now, the consensus points to a more conservative 0.25 point reduction.

This reevaluation stems from escalating concerns: the inflationary impact of a stronger U.S. dollar and intensifying geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East.
Central bank faces heightened economic headwinds
The Central Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (Copom) convenes this Tuesday and Wednesday. They will decide on the Selic rate amid a complex economic backdrop, as market participants recalibrate outlooks.
Last week, the Brazilian forward curve began shedding strong bets on a 0.50 percentage point Selic cut. It now reflects a measurable, though minority, chance of maintaining the rate at 15%.
Revised inflation outlook for 2025 and 2026
The latest market survey reveals an upward revision in Brazil’s inflation projections. This signals persistent price pressures challenging economic stability and suggests a less optimistic consumer price trajectory.
Experts increased their 2026 inflation estimate to 4.10%, a rise from 3.91%. This highlights growing apprehension about sustained inflationary drivers.
For end-2025, the Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA) estimate remains unchanged at 3.80%. This figure still exceeds the official 3.00% target, which permits a 1.5 percentage point tolerance margin.
Analysts recalibrate Selic rate trajectory for 2025
Beyond the immediate decision, analysts adjusted longer-term expectations for Brazil’s benchmark interest rate. They now forecast a prolonged period of elevated borrowing costs, reflecting current economic signals.
The consensus for Selic at end-2025 rose to 12.25%, up from 12.13% just last week. This change suggests monetary easing will likely be more gradual than first thought.
Looking to 2027, Selic projections hold steady at 10.50%. This consistency implies eventual receding inflationary pressures, allowing for normalized monetary policy.
A more substantial 0.50 percentage point cut is still anticipated for Copom’s subsequent April policy meeting. This indicates medium-term easing remains possible, contingent on economic stabilization.
Economic growth sees modest upward adjustment
Brazil’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth forecast for the current year received a marginal, positive upward revision amidst the shifting monetary policy landscape. This suggests some resilience in economic activity.
Analysts subtly increased their 2025 GDP growth estimate by 0.01 percentage point, reaching 1.83%. The 2027 projection remains unchanged at 1.80%, indicating consistent, modest expansion.
Global and domestic pressures influence policymaking
Confluent external and internal economic pressures decisively shape the central bank’s cautious interest rate approach. Global uncertainties, exacerbated by geopolitical events, exert considerable influence.
Domestically, the U.S. dollar’s trajectory against the Brazilian real introduces significant inflationary risks. These challenges necessitate a prudent, adaptive monetary strategy to safeguard economic health.
Geopolitical tensions and currency volatility drive caution
The primary catalysts behind market revisions are heightened concerns regarding global economic stability and domestic currency valuation. The recent sharp U.S. dollar appreciation against the Brazilian real raises red flags; a stronger dollar typically means higher import costs, fueling domestic inflation. Concurrently, intensifying Middle East conflict introduces significant geopolitical risk, threatening global supply chains, commodity prices, and investor confidence. These potent external factors compel the Central Bank to adopt a more conservative monetary easing approach, prioritizing inflation control and financial stability over aggressive stimulus.
Market adapts to evolving risk landscape
The current dynamic economic scenario vividly illustrates how rapidly market expectations can shift. Analysts meticulously weigh global events against domestic policy objectives to continually recalibrate their short- and long-term forecasts.
