Asian giant BYD, currently the largest global manufacturer of electrified vehicles, confirmed the recall of 89,811 units of the Qin Plus DM-i plug-in hybrid model in Chinese territory. The call covers cars assembled in the period between January 2021 and September 2023. The central reason for this massive action involves an error on the battery pack assembly line, a situation that directly threatens the integrity of the occupants and the proper functioning of the car.

The corrective procedure was formalized before the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), which serves as China’s main trade oversight entity. According to the official document, the technical anomaly can trigger a series of dangerous events while driving:

  • Abrupt interruption of power delivery to the driver.
  • Complete blocking of the use of purely electrical mode.
  • Total and unexpected shutdown of the car in critical scenarios.

Given these vulnerabilities, the risk of serious traffic collisions increases considerably, requiring immediate attention from owners.

The investigations that culminated in this preventive measure began shortly after the regulatory body received several formal complaints and complaints from consumers. With the aim of regaining public trust and ensuring the protection of drivers, the automaker committed to carrying out all required repairs at no cost. This warranty includes the full replacement of defective components, ensuring that customers do not suffer financial losses from corrective maintenance.

Understand the technical origin of the failure and the dangers for drivers

The core of the problem lies in a lack of standardization during high-voltage battery pack manufacturing. As detailed in the company’s statement, irregularities present in specific parts of the power module end up restricting the electrical supply capacity, a situation that worsens in moments of high demand, such as sudden accelerations or steep climbs. When this happens, the vehicle management software misreads this variation, classifying it as a critical system failure.

As soon as the defect manifests itself, whoever is behind the wheel may feel a drastic drop in engine performance or, in the worst case scenario, face the car stopping completely. Although the instrument panel displays immediate visual alerts, there is a real chance that the car will lose traction power before the driver can react. The manufacturer highlighted that, until the publication of the call, there were no official records of injuries or crashes caused by this failure, but stressed that early intervention is the only way to neutralize future threats.

Repair strategy divided into two stages by the manufacturer

To resolve the setback definitively, the Chinese brand created an action plan structured in two distinct phases. The first step consists of sending a system update via the internet, known as Over-The-Air (OTA). This new data package has the function of improving the power cell diagnostic mechanism, enabling continuous and highly accurate tracking of the electrical module’s behavior.

The second phase comes into play if the newly installed software identifies any physical anomaly in the parts. In these specific situations, an emergency light will remain on permanently on the driver’s dashboard, accompanied by a message requiring the owner to contact an authorized dealer as soon as possible. The purpose of this alert is to force a thorough inspection of the company’s facilities.

If the mechanics confirm the presence of the structural defect during the in-person analysis, the store will completely replace the entire set of batteries. The automaker made it clear that the entire logistical and technical process, from the initial assessment to labor and equipment exchange, will be completely free, shielding the consumer from unexpected expenses.

Recent history points to a sequence of mass summons

The current call highlights a moment of rigorous scrutiny over the company’s quality standards, adding to other major calls made recently. In the month of October alone, the corporation had to collect 115,299 copies of the Tang DM-i and Yuan Pro sports utility vehicles. At that time, the official justification also pointed to a danger
