Hyundai has initiated a recall of more than 421,000 vehicles due to a software issue that can cause the brakes to activate unexpectedly. The defect affects certain Santa Cruz, Tucson, Tucson hybrid and Tucson plug-in hybrid models from the years 2025 and 2026. The measure aims to reduce the risk of accidents related to the failure of the front camera of the collision avoidance system.
Conforme to Administração Nacional of Segurança Rodoviária (NHTSA), front camera software may cause the forward collision avoidance system to activate prematurely. Quando activated inappropriately, the system applies the brakes unexpectedly, creating a risky situation for drivers and passengers. Quatro accidents have already been reported as a result of this failure.
Acidentes and defect-related injuries
The 4 accidents caused by premature activation of the brakes resulted in injuries. Quatro people were injured during these events. Hyundai recognized the issue after analyzing owner reports and safety data collected by NHTSA. The pattern of incidents led the automaker to accelerate the recall process and notify owners of affected vehicles.
Processo notification and correction
Proprietários will be notified by mail starting in mid-July. The communication will inform you of the need to take the vehicle to an Hyundai dealer to receive a free software update. The procedure solves the problem identified in the front cameras without the need to change components or charge the car’s owners.
Histórico Recent Hyundai Recalls
The automaker has implemented several recalls in recent months:
- In April, it recalled 290,000 vehicles due to a defect in the seat belt anchorages that could cause these components to fail.
- In March, it announced the suspension of sales of the Limited and Calligraphy versions of the Hyundai Palisade 2026 after the death of a child in an accident involving electric seats that did not detect people or objects
- The current recall represents the third major recall in less than 4 months
The sequence of security problems led Hyundai to intensify inspection and testing processes for its electronic systems. The automaker informed NHTSA that the software will be updated to improve the accuracy of the front cameras’ computer vision system and prevent false activations of the collision avoidance system.
Proprietários of affected vehicles can check the recall status on the NHTSA website using their automobile’s chassis number (VIN). Hyundai also provides a customer service channel to clarify doubts about the correction process and scheduling deadlines at authorized dealerships.
