NASA has released details about a total solar eclipse scheduled for August 2, 2027. The event will last 6 minutes and 22 seconds at its maximum phase, surpassing the April 2024 eclipse, which lasted 4 minutes and 28 seconds. The magnitude will reach 1.079, ensuring complete coverage of the Sun.

The phenomenon begins in the East Atlantic and mainly affects the Eastern Hemisphere. Countries such as Egypt, Spain and Saudi Arabia will register the entirety.

  • Start of totality: over the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Countries with full visibility: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen.
  • Maximum point: close to Egypt.

Eclipse trajectory

The path of totality begins in the East Atlantic in the morning. It advances to North Africa and continues to the Middle East.

Regions in western Europe and parts of central Africa will observe the eclipse in partial form. The duration decreases as you move away from the center of the track.

Countries with totality

Egypt records the peak at 6 minutes and 22 seconds of darkness. Spain sees the phenomenon in the south of the territory for about 5 minutes.

Other locations include:

  • Morocco: beginning of the land strip.
  • Libya and Tunisia: duration over 5 minutes.
  • Saudi Arabia: visibility in the west.

Comparison with previous events

The eclipse of 2027 surpasses that of April 8, 2024, which occurred in North America. At the time, the maximum duration was 4 minutes and 28 seconds in Torreón, Mexico.

Total eclipses longer than 6 minutes occur rarely. The last similar one happened in 1973, at 7 minutes and 4 seconds in Africa.

Visibility in other regions

South America will not have a direct view of the event. Live broadcasts will be offered by space agencies.

Eastern Europe and Western Asia register partiality. The percentage of solar coverage varies from 50% to 90% in these areas.

Observation Preparation

Glasses with solar filter are mandatory for safe vision. Equipment such as telescopes need adequate protections.

NASA plans observation missions at key points in the range. Data collected will help in studies on the solar corona.

Technical details of the phenomenon

The Moon’s shadow covers a strip approximately 200 kilometers wide. Outside this area, the eclipse appears partial.

The magnitude 1.079 indicates that the apparent diameter of the Moon exceeds that of the Sun by 7.9%. This condition allows for prolonged totality.
